Spring is here, and the dog days of summer will arrive before you know it. Most of us love spending time outside in the warmer months. In fact, 75% of Americans feel it’s important to hang out in their yards. The sounds and smells of freshly mowed lawns are all around during the summer season, but that doesn’t mean you’re mowing yours correctly. While getting your lawn mowers through a Husqvarna dealer will ensure your equipment is the best in the business, you still might be making some mistakes with your lawn beautification efforts. We’ll take a look at a few below.
- Mowing too infrequently or too often
Ideally, you should mow your lawn once or twice per week. But it really depends on the type of grass you have, how quickly it grows, and even the season. When you allow your grass to grow too tall, you may end up cutting off too much when you finally mow. But some types of grasses tend to do most of their growing in spring and fall, rather than summer. Mowing these grasses too frequently will make them look less lush. A good rule to keep in mind is you should never have to mow off more than one-third of your grass height to bring it to where it should be.
- Not alternating patterns
Did you know that you should switch up how you mow your lawn every time? Grass blades tend to grow in the direction in which they’re mowed, so if you always mow the same pattern, you may notice your lawn has a bit of a slant. By changing up your pattern every time, your grass will grow in a straighter way. In addition, this will also prevent any ruts forming in the ground from your motor wheels.
- Mowing with blunt blades
So you’ve already gotten a great mower from your Husqvarna dealer. That will ensure your equipment is superior at the onset, but you’ll still need to maintain it. Just like with your own razor, your mower’s blades need to be sharp to do their best work. If you mow with dull mower blades, you won’t end up with a clean cut. Instead, you’ll be ripping the blades of grass apart, which can result in discoloration, as well as vulnerability to disease and drought. Your mower blades should be sharpened at least once a year. If your lawn has extraneous rocks or tree roots, you may need to sharpen it more often.
